Phenta Drops is a combination medication commonly used for the symptomatic treatment of cold and flu symptoms, including nasal congestion, pain, and fever. It contains three active ingredients: Paracetamol, Phenylephrine, and Chlorpheniramine Maleate (CPM).
Components and their Roles:
- Paracetamol (125mg per 1ml): An analgesic and antipyretic agent that reduces pain and fever.
- Phenylephrine (2.5mg per 1ml): A decongestant that works by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and congestion.
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate (CPM) (1mg per 1ml): An antihistamine that relieves symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itching, and it has mild sedative effects.
Indications / uses:
Phenta Drops are commonly used for:
- Relief of nasal congestion caused by colds, flu, or allergies.
- Fever and mild to moderate pain relief (headache, body aches, sore throat).
- Relief from symptoms of allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing and watery eyes).
Mechanism of Action:
- Paracetamol: Inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) in the brain, reducing the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals that promote pain and inflammation.
- Phenylephrine: Acts as a sympathomimetic agent, constricting the blood vessels in the nasal passages to reduce swelling and congestion.
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate (CPM): Blocks histamine receptors (H1 receptors), reducing allergy symptoms like sneezing and itching.
Dosage:
The dosage of Phenta Drops depends on the age of the patient:
- For Children (2-6 years): Typically, 1 to 2 ml every 4-6 hours (as per a doctor's recommendation).
- For Children (6-12 years): Usually, 2-4 ml every 4-6 hours.
- For Adults: 5 ml every 4-6 hours.
Note: Always follow the dosage prescribed by your healthcare provider or as instructed on the label.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects of Phenta Drops can include:
- Drowsiness or sedation (due to chlorpheniramine)
- Dry mouth, dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Increased heart rate (from phenylephrine)
- Rash or allergic reaction (rare)
- Insomnia (due to stimulation from phenylephrine)
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
- Severe liver disease (due to paracetamol).
- Glaucoma (due to phenylephrine).
- Pregnancy (only use if prescribed by a healthcare provider, as some components might not be safe during pregnancy).

Drug Interactions:
- Other antihistamines: Can enhance the sedative effect.
- Alcohol: Increases the risk of liver toxicity when combined with paracetamol.
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): May enhance the effects of phenylephrine, leading to an increase in blood pressure.
- Beta-blockers: Can interact with phenylephrine, increasing the risk of elevated blood pressure.
- Antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs): Can interact with chlorpheniramine, increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome.
