Use and Indications of Ondansetron Syrup:

Ondansetron 2 mg syrup is primarily used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting caused by:

  1. Chemotherapy (CINV): Especially for highly emetogenic cancer therapies.

  2. Radiotherapy (RINV): Associated with radiation treatments.

  3. Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): After surgery.

  4. Gastroenteritis: In some cases, to manage nausea and vomiting in children and adults.

 

Mechanism of Action of Dovion Syrup:

Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It works by:

  • Blocking serotonin receptors in the central nervous system (CNS), specifically in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ).

  • Inhibiting serotonin-mediated signals in the gastrointestinal tract, which prevents nausea and vomiting.

 

Dosage of Ondansetron Syrup:

Pediatric and Adult Dosage:

  • Typically prescribed based on body weight or age.

  • For Children (≥6 months): 0.15 mg/kg per dose every 8 hours or as directed by the physician.

  • For Adults: 4–8 mg every 8 hours as needed.

Always follow the doctor's prescription to avoid under dosing or overdosing.

 

How Ondansetron (Dovion Syrup) works

Ondansetron is an antiemetic medication. It works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger (serotonin) in the brain that may cause nausea and vomiting during anti-cancer treatment (chemotherapy) or after surgery.

Side Effects of Dovion Syrup :

Common side effects:

  1. Headache

  2. Dizziness

  3. Fatigue or drowsiness

  4. Constipation or diarrhea

  5. Dry mouth

Serious side effects (rare):

  1. QT Prolongation: Risk of arrhythmias.

  2. Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).

  3. Blurred vision or temporary vision loss.

Contraindications of Dovion Syrup:

  • Allergy to Ondansetron or any components of the formulation.

  • Patients with a history of congenital long QT syndrome.

  • Use caution in hepatic impairment, as dosage adjustments may be required.

Drug Interactions of Ondansetron Syrup:

  1. Apomorphine: May cause severe hypotension and loss of consciousness.

  2. Medications that prolong QT interval: E.g., antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics.

  3. CYP3A4 Inducers/Inhibitors: May affect metabolism of ondansetron.

  4. Serotonergic agents (SSRIs, SNRIs): Risk of serotonin syndrome.
