Cefpodoxime (SPINXO 100 Tablet) Use & Indication:
Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a third-generation cephalosporin and works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, ultimately leading to bacterial death. It is commonly prescribed for:
-
Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis)
-
Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
-
Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis)
-
Skin and soft tissue infections
-
Ear infections (e.g., otitis media)
-
Gonorrhea (genital infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae)
Dosage: The usual adult dose of Cefpodoxime is 100 mg every 12 hours, though this can vary depending on the severity of the infection and the patient's health. For children, the dose is typically adjusted based on weight. The tablet can be taken with or without food, but it should be taken with a full glass of water.
-
For adults: 100 mg every 12 hours.
-
For children: Dosage is weight-based, typically ranging from 5 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg per day in divided doses.
Mechanism of Action: Cefpodoxime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to bacterial cell death. It binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are involved in the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. Without this structural component, the bacteria cannot maintain their cell wall integrity and eventually burst and die.
Side Effects: Common side effects of Cefpodoxime include:
-
Diarrhea (can be severe or watery, and may indicate Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea)
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Abdominal pain
-
Headache
-
Dizziness
-
Rash
-
Allergic reactions (swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, etc.)
-
Liver enzyme elevations (transaminases)
-
Blood disorders (e.g., leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)
-
Seizures (in rare cases)
How Cefpodoxime (SPINXO 100 Tablet) works
Cefpodoxime Proxetil is an antibiotic. It kills the bacteria by preventing them from forming the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is needed for them to survive.
Contraindications:
-
Allergy to cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins)
-
Severe renal impairment (may need dose adjustments)
-
History of allergic reactions to cephalosporins or penicillin-based antibiotics
-
Severe gastrointestinal conditions, such as colitis or intestinal disease
Drug Interactions:
-
Probenecid: This can increase the blood concentration of cefpodoxime by inhibiting its renal excretion.
-
Antacids or H2 blockers: These may reduce the absorption of cefpodoxime from the gastrointestinal tract.
-
Warfarin (a blood thinner): Cefpodoxime may increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, which can lead to a higher risk of bleeding.
-
Other nephrotoxic drugs: When combined with other nephrotoxic drugs, the risk of kidney damage can increase.
