The combination of Cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin, and Clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, enhances the effectiveness against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes, which would otherwise degrade the antibiotic.
Mechanism of Action:
Cefpodoxime: It is a broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin that works by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis. This leads to the weakening and eventual lysis of the bacterial cell wall, effectively killing the bacteria.
Clavulanic acid: It works by inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes that bacteria secrete to break down antibiotics. By preventing this breakdown, clavulanic acid enhances the activity of cefpodoxime against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.
Together, the combination allows the medication to treat a wider range of infections.
Dosage:
Adults and children over 12 years of age: The usual dose is 5 ml of the reconstituted syrup (equivalent to 50 mg of cefpodoxime and 31.25 mg of clavulanic acid) twice daily. The exact dosage depends on the type and severity of the infection.
Children (under 12 years): The dosage is adjusted according to the child’s weight and the severity of the infection. A pediatrician should determine the appropriate dosage.
For optimal absorption, it's usually recommended to take the medication with food.
Note: Always follow the prescribed dosage by a healthcare provider.
