XYLOVIR 800 Tablet (Aciclovir IP 800 mg)

A Potent Anti Viral Drug Medicine

Trused Solution For Viral Infection Therapy, Promotes Cutaneous Healing, Reduces Neuron Damage, Well Tolerated With Good Safety Profile.

XYLOVIR 800 Tablet contains Acyclovir 800 mg, an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Acyclovir works by inhibiting viral replication, making it effective in reducing the severity and duration of viral infections. It is commonly used for managing conditions like cold sores, genital herpes, chickenpox, and shingles.

Uses and Indications:

XYLOVIR 800 Tablet is primarily used for the treatment of:

  1. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Infections:
    • Genital herpes (both primary and recurrent outbreaks).
    • Herpes labialis (cold sores).
    • Herpes simplex encephalitis (brain infection).
  2. Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) Infections:
    • Chickenpox (Varicella).
    • Shingles (Herpes zoster).
  3. Other Uses:
    • Prevention of HSV infections in immunocompromised patients (e.g., those with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients).

Dosage:

  • Adult Dosage:
    • For genital herpes: 400 mg orally, 3 times a day for 7-10 days (or as directed by the physician).
    • For shingles: 800 mg orally, 5 times a day for 7-10 days.
    • For cold sores: 200 mg orally, 5 times a day for 5 days.
  • Pediatric Dosage:
    • Dosage depends on age and condition. Always consult with a pediatrician for the correct dose.

Note: The dosage may vary based on the severity of the infection and the patient’s medical condition. Always follow the healthcare provider's recommendations.

Mechanism of Action:

Acyclovir is a synthetic nucleoside analogue of guanosine. It works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA. The drug is converted into its active form (acyclovir triphosphate) inside infected cells by the viral enzyme thymidine kinase. This active form inhibits the viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral DNA replication and thereby halting the spread of the virus.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Fatigue.
  • Skin rash or itching.

Serious side effects (rare but requiring medical attention):

  • Kidney issues: Acyclovir can cause renal impairment, especially in patients with preexisting kidney conditions.
  • Neurological issues: Seizures, tremors, confusion (more common in high doses or in patients with renal dysfunction).
  • Allergic reactions: Swelling, difficulty breathing, and severe skin reactions.

Contraindications:

XYLOVIR 800 should not be used in individuals who have:

  • Allergic reactions to acyclovir or any of the other components of the tablet.
  • Severe kidney disease (renal impairment). Close monitoring is required in such patients.

Drug Interactions:

Acyclovir may interact with several medications, including:

  1. Probenecid: May increase acyclovir levels in the blood.
  2. Zidovudine (AZT): Can cause an increase in the risk of side effects like drowsiness, nausea, or headache.
  3. Cimetidine: May increase acyclovir levels and the risk of side effects.
  4. Other nephrotoxic drugs: Concomitant use with drugs that affect kidney function may increase the risk of kidney damage.
