Levofloxacin
Levofloxacin is a synthetic antibacterial agent of the fluoroquinolone class and is the S(-) enantiomer of the racemic drug substance ofloxacin.
Indications of Levofloxacin
Acute sinusitis, Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis,Community-acquired pneumonia, Complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis, Skin and soft tissue infections.
Dosage of Levofloxacin
Once or twice daily.Maximum duration of treatment of 14 days.
Contra-Indications of Levofloxacin
Hypersensitivity Epilepsy, history of tendon disorders, in children or growing adolescents.
Special Precautions of Levofloxacin
Clostridium difficile-associated diseases, Tendinitis,Patients predisposed to seizures, Patients with renal impairment, Prevention of photosensitisation.
Side Effects of Levofloxacin
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, constipation, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), dizziness, abdominal pain
Drug Interactions of Levofloxacin
Iron salts, Magnesium or aluminium-containing antacids, Sucralfate, Theophylline, fenbufen or similar non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
ORNIDAZOLE
It is a 5-nitroimidazole derivative. Its antimicrobial actions are similar to metronidazole and is used similarly in the treatment of susceptible protozoal infections and prophylaxis of anaerobic bacterial infections.
Indications of Ornidazole :
Severe intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis of urogenital tract, bacterial vaginosis, treatment of susceptible anaerobic infections.
Dosage of Ornidazole :
Amoebiasis: Adults:500mg twice a day orally for 5 days. Children: 10-25 mg/kg body weight in two divided doses. Amoebic dysentery: Adults: 1.5 gms orally once a day for 3 days. Children: 40 mg/kg body weight, once a day for 3 days. Giardiasis: Adults: 1.5 g, once daily for 1-2 days. Children: 40mg/kg body weight for 2 days. Trichomoniasis: 1.5 gm once orally or 500mg twice a day for 5 days. Bacterial vaginosis: 3 tablets of 500mg each as a single dose.
Contra-Indications of Ornidazole :
Hypersensitivity to ornidazole and other imidazoles.
Special Precautions of Ornidazole :
In patients with ataxia, vertigo and mental confusion, Ornidazole should be given with caution because the drug has been occasionally reported to aggravate neurological complications in patients with central and peripheral nervous system disorders. Pregnancy & Lactation: To be used only if the potential benefits justifies the potential risk to foetus/neonate.
Side Effects of Ornidazole :
Nausea, pain in the abdomen, vertigo, headache, skin-rash are generally reported.
Drug Interactions of Ornidazole :
Concomitant administration of oral anticoagulants may increase the risk of haemorrhage due to diminished hepatic metabolism.
